Peer Tutoring
Collaborative learning is a dynamic process shaped by the ongoing negotiation of power and authority within each tutoring session. While the idea of positioning tutors as peers aims to create a sense of equality, it can overlook the inherent hierarchies that exist in any educational setting.
Observation Report of a Peer Tutor
In this observation report, I analyze a session led by veteran tutor Mark McCleskey, focusing on how his strategies embodied the UWC’s values—particularly respect and learning and growth. The session centered on a first-time UWC visitor working on a research paper about citation practices. I was especially struck by how Mark prioritized the writer’s agency from the beginning, inviting consent for observation and establishing a collaborative, low-pressure environment.

Through my analysis, I reflect on the power of setting an inclusive tone, asking open-ended questions, and introducing resources that empower writers beyond the session. I also consider missed opportunities to connect more deeply with the writer’s identity, background, and prior writing experiences. This reflection has helped me understand how even brief moments of identity acknowledgment can impact the learning dynamic.
Observation Report of a Me Peer Tutoring by a Peer Tutor
Fellow peer tutor, Emma Weis, observed me leading a tutoring session that exemplified collaboration, adaptability, and care. Faced with the challenge of reviewing a sixteen-page literature review in just 45 minutes, she noted how I tried to create a welcoming and focused environment, allowing the writer to feel heard and supported. Emma highlights my use of strategic agenda-setting, mid-session check-ins, and external resources like Purdue OWL to guide the writer through complex revision goals. Despite time constraints, she mentions that I remained flexible and attentive, which helped empower the writer to take ownership of her work. Emma reflects on my approach as a model for effective tutoring and plans to incorporate similar strategies in her own sessions.
